The Cuddy

9 Thomas Terrace, Porthleven, Helston, Cornwall TR13 9DE

Porthleven

Porthleven is mainland Britain’s most southerly port.  It is a lovely village on the western side of The Lizard peninsula, about three miles from Helston and twelve miles from Penzance.  Its history goes back 400 years and its fine harbour is over 150 years old.  Today Porthleven has a strong local community which welcomes visitors throughout the year.

Around the harbour are a small supermarket, chemist, baker, fishmonger and several attractive small shops. There are three pubs, all serving food, restaurants and cafes. A few yards up Fore Street are the Post Office and newsagent and other shops.

There is a large, clean beach just south of the harbour. The South West Coastal Path around The Lizard passes through Porthleven and is magnificent for walking. Our climate is very Cornish; mild with a brilliantly blue sky.  When it rains it can be heavy, then the sky clears, the earth steams and the lush Cornish vegetation flourishes.  Inland, the moorland of The Lizard leads to the most southerly point on the mainland at Lizard Point, with sheltered valleys leading to the sea.

The Cuddy

In 1874 John Thomas purchased an area of land in Porthleven and around 1880 the granite, fishermen’s cottages of Thomas Terrace were built. The Cuddy has subsequently been extended to the rear where there is a narrow, pedestrian lane between Thomas Terrace and Thomas Street.  The original external cob walls are very thick and inside there are exposed, dark wood beams, characteristic of the area.

The Cuddy is now a private home and is not available for holiday accommodation.
