Wed 17th to Sat 20th | Barnstaple Fair - this ancient "end of harvest" fair starts on the Wednesday before 20th September each year. Originally it was an agricultural market and employment fair lasting three days: one day for horses, another for cattle and the other for sheep. Farm labourers were employed "until Barnstaple Fair"; they'd then come to town to seek "a new maister". Nowadays there is a vast funfair (second only to Nottingham Goose Fair, in size), which is in full swing from late afternoon until midnight for each of the four days. *picture of mayor (bottom left) testing the scales to ensure honest trading in the Pannier Market. |
